Milling is the process by which old and damaged pavement is removed to prepare the surface for new overlay. Also called grinding or cold planing, milling removes the high points in an existing pavement to produce a relatively smooth surface. Milling machines fitted with automatic grade controls can restore both longitudinal and transverse grades, all while removing damage from rutting, bumps and deteriorated surface material. Effective milling can also recycle old pavement for use in new material production.
